Compressed air is generally atmospheric air that is compressed by a compressor to a volume smaller than the original volume. Compression results in an increase in pressure. Compressed air is used to operate devices or processes.
Compressed air conditioning is the process of preparing and conditioning compressed air for use in various applications. When air is compressed, moisture, particles, and oil vapors are drawn in through the compressor intake. This includes water (vapor), oil (vapor), particulates, and microorganisms. Conditioning the compressed air prevents these contaminants from entering the compressed air lines. It is important to meet the quality requirements of the application to maintain or improve performance and reliability. Therefore, after air compression, the compressed air must be conditioned according to ISO8573-1:2010, with the necessary class depending on the application. Using compressed air filters and compressed air dryers (such as adsorption dryers or refrigerated dryers), the remaining particles are removed or reduced to an acceptable class level. This is necessary, for example, to prevent corrosion, reducing the potential damage to compressed air lines, pneumatic tools, or systems.

Conditioned compressed air is used for 'breathing air'. Think of hospitals or paint shops where masks are worn. Conditioned compressed air is also used for generating nitrogen gas (N2). Atmospheric air contains approximately 78% nitrogen. With the help of a nitrogen generator, this nitrogen can be filtered out of the compressed air and used for various purposes.
