Allergens in indoor air can be harmful
Studies have shown that about 30% of the Dutch population suffers from allergies at some point due to substances such as pollen, cat or dog dander, and dust mite droppings.
These otherwise harmless substances can have harmful effects on the respiratory system of individuals who are sensitive to them. Not only hay fever but also allergic asthma are partly caused by these allergens.
In many cases, people rely on others to prevent exposure to allergens. This is the case at work or during a stay in a hotel or a healthcare facility.
Reduce health complaints caused by allergens
The risk of allergic reactions can be reduced with a strict regime for the facility service where the living space is regularly and thoroughly cleaned. However, allergens can also float in the air due to the pollution of the ventilation system or due to air currents caused by movements in the space.
Clean mechanical ventilation ducts
To prevent health complaints in employees, guests, residents, or patients as much as possible, it is recommended to regularly inspect and potentially clean the air ducts of existing mechanical ventilation systems. Mold and bacteria growth can occur in these ducts over time due to pollution. Mold spores and bacteria are then carried with the airflow and blown into the space.
Apply air filters
It is also recommended to apply air filters that comply with the recommended European standard EN16798-3. This standard advises on which filter class should be minimally applied for certain situations. The criteria include the prevailing outdoor air pollution and the use or occupancy of the building. Good filters not only protect people's health but also prevent unnecessary pollution of the mechanical ventilation system.
Use air purifiers
For locations where no or insufficient (mechanical) ventilation is present, professional air purifiers can be of great service. These filter allergens from the air and, depending on the type, can also remove virus carriers and other pathogens from the air.
