From Inventory to Installation of HVAC Filters

Knowledge Sessions on Filters in the HVAC Industry

As you may know, I have been working at Interfilter Group since January 2023. As an employee in the Inside Sales department, I want to assist our customers as effectively as possible and, of course, I had to learn everything about air filters and their applications. For this, I have been trained internally through knowledge sessions on various types of filtration, including air filtration. The knowledge sessions on air filtration cover everything about the types of air filters, selecting the right air filter, the different standards and filter classes that HVAC filters must meet, and much more. I can now even tell you more about inventorying and installing HVAC filters in practice.

Inventory and Replacement of HVAC Filters

As a technician, installer, or person replacing the HVAC filter, there are several important things to consider during the replacement process. Air filters must be installed properly to ensure correct operation. The most important points are summarized below.

Inventory or Recording of HVAC Filters

Before filters can even be installed, it is necessary to note the correct details during a prior filter inventory. During the filter inventory or recording, several points must be checked. First, determine which type of filter it is and what material the filter is made of. Fiberglass or synthetic medium, cardboard frame or metal frame? Also, take inventory of the dimensions. For example, what is the maximum bag length for the air handling unit? We offer a very handy inventory form which you can download from our website.

Replacing HVAC Filters

Next, it’s time to replace the filter. Start by switching off the work switch to ensure safety while working. The HVAC filter must then be replaced correctly. This involves removing the old bag filter, cleaning the air handling unit, and installing the new HVAC filter.

• When installing, ensure that the filter bags are placed vertically, as if they are placed horizontally, the bags will hang, which negatively affects airflow, filter lifespan, and energy consumption. Additionally, the bags may lie at the bottom in horizontal installation, which can cause mold formation.
• It must also be checked that the HVAC filter is securely and leak-free. This includes ensuring that the filter clamps are tight or, in the case of a sliding construction, that the filters fit tightly together with no rust in the sliding construction. The sealing material should not be missing or damaged.
• All air filters should be installed in the correct order if multiple filters are positioned consecutively in the air handling unit.

Finally, I advise all technicians to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) during the entire replacement process for their own safety and health.

I have also frequently inventoried HVAC filters in practice. Very educational! I noticed that it often happens that you need an immediate answer or advice to a question. You can then send us a photo of, for example, the air handling unit or the filters and ask your question right away.
