Industrial filter housings are used for the purification of liquids. Filter housings are equipped with various filter media, such as filter bags, filter candles, or pleated elements. The filters in the housings remove particles, contaminants, and other unwanted substances from process flows.
In most filter housings, filter bags or filter candles are placed. The liquid is then pumped through the filter. The filter bags or candles filter out dirt particles from the liquid until the filter medium becomes saturated. This increases the pressure inside the filter housing, which also indicates when the filter should be replaced. Filter housings are suitable for various industries and can be tailored to meet the specific needs of the customer and sector. The housings are available in different materials, configurations, pressure ratings, and with various connection options.
In this blog, our Process Product Manager, Ruud Meinen, will gladly tell you more about the various possibilities.
The difference between filter housings with filter bags or filter candles
Filter housings for filter bags and filter housings for filter candles are both designed for filtering liquids in industrial applications, but they differ in the way the filter works and the applications in which they are most effective.
Filter housing with filter bag
Filter housings for filter bags are specifically designed to contain filter bags. These bags are made from materials such as needlefelt or nylon monofilament and can have various filter finenesses. The material the bags are made from is tailored to the composition of the liquid being purified and its temperature. The liquid flows through the filter bag, where particles and contaminants are captured by the filter medium. Filter housings for filter bags are suitable for applications where larger particles or irregularly shaped contaminants need to be removed. They are often easy to maintain because the filter bags can be relatively easily replaced. In addition to felt and mesh bags, pleated filter elements can also be used in a filter housing for filter bags. These filter elements consist of pleats and therefore have a much larger filter surface.
Filter housing with filter candle
Filter housings for filter candles, on the other hand, contain cylindrical filter elements called filter candles. Filter candles are usually made from progressively wound filter material or compressed fibers, known as meltblown. Candles are also available with metal mesh (for high temperatures, cleanable), pleated media (for higher filtration, large filter surface), or activated carbon. Candles are effective at removing fine particles and generally provide higher filtration efficiency than filter bags. Filter housings for filter candles are often used in applications where very clean liquids are required, such as in the pharmaceutical industry or in drinking water production. They are generally more durable and require less frequent filter changes compared to filter bags.
Difference between filter housing with bag or candle
The main difference between these two types of filter housings is the type of filter medium they contain and the specific applications for which they are most suitable. The choice between filter housings with filter bags or filter housings with filter candles depends on the liquid being filtered (e.g., chemical resistance), the required filtration degree, the amount and composition of the contamination, and the industrial needs of the process.
Filter housings with multiple bags or candles
Multi-bag filter housings are filter housings with multiple bags in a single housing, and multi-cartridge filter housings contain multiple filter candles. These housings are used to filter larger volumes of liquid and are designed to remove particles and contaminants from the liquid as efficiently as possible. Using a filter housing with multiple filters also ensures that the filters are faster and easier to replace, and the housing is quicker and easier to clean compared to multiple separate filter housings with a single filter element.
Benefits of Interfilter filter housings
Here are some key features and benefits of our (multi) filter housings:
- Easy to maintain
- Wide variety of applications
- Various designs available in terms of size, material composition, etc.
- Optimal sealing, no bypass
- Sturdy closure, easy to open
- Long lifespan
- Standard configurations in stock
Different materials for filter housings
Filter housings are available in various materials, such as carbon steel, stainless steel 304, stainless steel 316, stainless steel 316L, stainless steel 316Ti, and more.
The choice of material depends on factors such as the nature of the substances being filtered, temperature and pressure conditions, chemical compatibility, and operational requirements. It is important to select the right material to ensure the filter housing functions effectively and safely.
For applications where steel and stainless steel are not suitable for filtering liquids, we can supply special plastic filter housings. Additionally, you can choose from various sealing and gasket materials, such as NBR, EPDM, Viton, Teflon, and more.
Connection options for filter housings
The inlet and outlet connections of the filter housing can be tailored to your specific requirements. The most common connection options include ANSI and DIN flanges, BSP, NPT, Tri-Clamp, DIN 11851 milk connections, and Cam-Lock.
To avoid interrupting the filtration process completely when the filters become saturated, we offer our duplex and multiplex filter systems with shut-off valves that can be operated manually or pneumatically. This way, a single filter housing can be shut off from the main flow to replace the filter.
The choice of connection option depends on the specific application, required sealing, filter interchangeability, and other factors such as hygienic requirements.
Magnetic inserts for filter housings
Many industrial liquids are contaminated with coarse iron-containing particles that can damage systems and products. A magnetic filter removes very fine metal particles, thus preventing wear and downtime in often critical systems.
Magnetic filters can be placed in existing pipelines and are easy to open without having to remove the filter from the piping system. The magnetic cores are quick and easy to clean.
For large volumes, we can supply single magnetic filter housings with one magnetic core, as well as multi-unit filters with multiple magnetic cores.
If the liquid does not contain iron-containing particles, both filter housings with filter bags and filter housings with filter candles can be used. These filter housings are available in various materials, configurations, pressure ratings, and with different connections, tailored to the specific needs of the industry.
- Filters sub-micron particles
- No replacement filter elements
- Captures up to 181 kg
- Reduces wear and downtime on often critical systems
- Easy to clean
Insulating filter housings
Insulating filter housings can be important to maintain thermal stability, prevent condensation, or meet specific temperature or environmental requirements. It can also help save energy, increase efficiency, and meet environmental and safety standards. If desired, we can supply filter housings insulated.
Assembling a mobile skid
We also have the option to supply filter housings as a skid. This means that the filter housing installation, including possibly piping and/or pumps, is mobile. The various components are assembled on a frame in pallet format. Mobile filter housings offer flexibility in moving filtration equipment to different locations or processes. Since a skid is often equipped with slots for forklift tines, the entire skid can easily be moved with a forklift. This is ideal as a temporary filtration solution, such as in a transshipment company, during renovation work, or in emergencies where contaminated liquid threatens the environment. In addition, a mobile skid with filter housings can be used where maintenance or cleaning is required. This minimizes downtime and ensures that the process is quickly operational again.
