A basket strainer is a type of filter used to remove solid particles from liquids or gases. It consists of a housing with a basket-shaped sieve, commonly referred to as a basket. These are typically made of stainless steel, through which the liquid flows. The basket traps particles that are too large to pass through its openings, keeping the liquid clean.
Filtration process of basket strainers
Basket strainers are simple yet effective in purifying liquids by capturing particles such as dirt and sediment. The liquid enters the housing via the inlet and flows through the basket. The basket captures particles while the purified liquid exits the housing via the outlet for further processing. This basket, centered within the housing, features a basket-like design with openings of varying sizes to achieve the desired filtration. During the filtration process, solid particles remain in the basket, while the purified liquid flows through. This results in a clean liquid ready for use, while the trapped particles are later removed during maintenance procedures.
Application of basket strainers
Basket strainers are used across various industries and situations. In the chemical industry, they remove solid particles from chemical mixtures to protect equipment from clogging and corrosion. In the food industry, they are used to purify food products by removing impurities like bits of pulp or seeds. Basket strainers also preserve equipment and ensure product quality in water treatment facilities, HVAC systems, and oil and gas installations.
Properties of basket strainers
Materials and Customizations
Basket strainers are available in a range of materials, including stainless steel, carbon steel, and even custom materials upon request. This variety enables users to choose the appropriate material based on the application and the nature of the liquid or gas to be filtered.
Capacity
The filtration rating of basket strainers ranges from 5 μm to 10,000 μm, making them capable of removing a wide range of particle sizes. This feature makes them suitable for various industries, from chemical processing to water treatment and food production.
Efficiency and Pressure Drop
With high filtration efficiency, basket strainers effectively remove contaminants while ensuring minimal pressure drop in the system. This allows for smooth liquid flow and minimizes energy loss.
Temperature
Thanks to their construction, basket strainers can withstand a broad temperature range. From -30 °C to +350 °C for carbon steel and from -80 °C to +480 °C for stainless steel, they remain reliable under diverse conditions.
Various Sizes
Whether standard sizes such as DN 15–400 mm (1/2" – 16") or custom dimensions, basket strainers can be tailored to the specific needs of any installation. They also offer various sealing and connection options, including flanges, threaded connections, and quick-connect clamps.
Different Types of Basket Strainers
In addition to standard versions, filter housings are often custom-designed and produced. A filter housing can even be produced entirely under PED certification.
Basket Filters (with a sieve basket)
Basket filters with a sieve basket are designed to efficiently filter liquids by retaining particles. They offer a versatile solution for various industrial applications and are available in different materials and pressure ratings.
Y-filters
Y-filters, with their Y-shaped design, provide optimal flow and filtration efficiency. They are easy to install and maintain, making them ideal for protecting equipment from clogging and damage.
T-filters
T-filters, made from standard T-sections, provide a simple and cost-effective filtration solution. They are suitable for various industrial environments.
Duplex Filter Systems
Duplex filter systems provide continuous filtration by automatically switching between filter units during cleaning or maintenance. They are ideal for critical applications where minimal downtime is crucial.
Temporary Filters / Temporary Strainers
Temporary filters, also known as temporary strainers, offer a quick and temporary solution for filtering liquids during maintenance or startup procedures. They are easy to install and remove without disrupting the normal operation of the system.
Certifications
One of the main certifications for basket strainers is the PED certificate, which stands for Pressure Equipment Directive. In addition to the PED certificate, the food grade certificate is also vital, especially for basket strainers used in the food industry. We can also supply strainers with welding and material certificates.
