With continuous filtration, particles are constantly removed from the water without interruption. There is no pause for a backwash, regeneration, or replacement of the filter medium. In most cases, we use a continuous sand filter. This system circulates the filter sand constantly and flushes it continuously. About 10% of the flushing water removes the captured particles.
Discontinuous filtration, on the other hand, periodically interrupts the filtration process through a backwash or regeneration. This is necessary to flush away contamination of the medium, leading to periodic discharge of wastewater. Different types of contamination require different filter media. For example, a filter vessel can be filled with:
- Sand
- Activated carbon
- Manganese dioxide
- Ion exchange resin
- And other materials
